UGANDA has got a grant of US$66,432,148 (sh116b) from the Global Fund, to start a new programme of malaria treatment.

Treasury secretary Chris Kassami signed the agreement on behalf of the government, while the Global Fund Portfolio manager for East Africa, Victor Bampoe, signed for the fund. The signing took place at the finance ministry's boardroom yesterday.

The funds shall be used for the introduction of the highly effective artemisinin-based Combination Therapy in the treatment of malaria over a five-year period, Kassami said.

He said the government would use the money to purchase the drugs and ensure their efficient use.

The health ministry will implement the programme.
